Project Topics Operations Purchasing, Logistics, Supply Chain
Skills & Expertise
Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
An overview of the challenge we are trying to address:

Correct Craft is a United States-based builder of powerboats primarily for waterskiing and wakeboard use. It was founded in 1925 by Walt C. Meloon as the Florida Variety Boat Company. Correct Craft is the oldest family-owned and operated boat manufacturer in the world.

For many years, they have been a key member of the American Boatbuilders Association (ABA), which is an industry association representing independent boat manufacturers in the United States. Founded in 1992, the ABA is composed of 13 leading boat manufacturers that build recreational boats in the United States, including some of the most well-known names in the industry.

The purpose of the ABA is to provide its members with resources and support to help them compete more effectively in the global marketplace. The ABA works to improve the industry's ability to provide high-quality boats, to promote the interests of its members, and to advocate for policies that benefit the industry as a whole.

Some of the services and benefits provided by the ABA to its members include networking opportunities, industry data and research, access to technical information, advocacy on behalf of the industry, access to insurance, as well as special vendor relationships negotiating power with vendors.

As an example, our largest company, Nautique Boat Company, purchases 48% of the cost of raw materials used to produce their boats through ABA Approved vendors. Although each company operates independently, with its own purchasing team, the ABA allows us to achieve better rates and reduce risk with the vendors that are essential in producing final products.

We would like your help updating our supply chain to help us increase efficiency and reduce risk. First, you will begin by evaluating our supply chain data, including distinguishing between ABA purchases vs. non-ABA purchases for 2022 across all our companies. Ultimately, we are most concerned with our non-ABA purchases since these vendors are not fully vetted, and thus may pose incremental risk.   Are these non-ABA vendors candidates for becoming part of the ABA?

If not, we would like to explore if there might be any synergies within our non-ABA vendors, which may help to maximize efficiency and/or reduce costs.

After that, we want you to conduct an overall risk analysis of our current suppliers based on information available on the web. Key to this process is identifying where our vendors source their raw materials and whether or not there are risk factors associated with their supply chains. We will also assess our suppliers' ability to provide backup materials and how they have dealt with delivery delays.

Lastly, we would like for you to make recommendations on the best practices we can implement that will help us create more efficiency and reduce risk when it comes to our non-ABA vendor approval and onboarding process.

Ultimately, our goal is to optimize our supply chain to minimize risk and maximize efficiency while ensuring that our suppliers are reliable and sustainable.

Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
The key action items required to complete this project:

The project will involve a comprehensive evaluation of the current supply chain to optimize it for minimizing risk and increasing efficiency, including:

  1. Evaluating our existing supply chain based on purchasing data provided: A thorough analysis of the 2022 spend data for both ABA and non-ABA vendors across all companies will be conducted. This will enable us to identify trends and patterns in purchasing and inform our decision-making process.

  2. Learning more about the ABA and why they exist in the industry: A deep understanding of the ABA and its role in the marine industry will be developed. This will help us identify whether there are comparable vendors within the ABA and determine the potential benefits of utilizing ABA vendors.

  3. Diving deeper into our non-ABA purchases to begin identifying why certain products: A deep dive into non-ABA purchases will be conducted to identify why certain products are being bought outside the ABA and if there are suitable vendors within the ABA. Determine if there are synergies and explore if there are more effective ways of procuring our needed raw materials. Showcase ways of reducing risk and/or costs through your recommendations.

  4. Exploring best practices for vendor management: We will establish best practices for vendor management, including onboarding and negotiation strategies when working with non-ABA vendors. This will ensure that we are getting the best possible terms and conditions from our vendors and reducing the risk of supply chain disruptions.

  5. Suggest ways Correct Craft can better evaluate risks and synergies when onboarding new vendors: Establish a risk analysis process for assessing new vendors. Ensure that we are selecting vendors that are reliable, ethical, and sustainable, and reduce the risk of supply chain disruptions.

Overall, the project will enable us to optimize our supply chain for minimizing risk and increasing efficiency while ensuring that we are working with vendors that meet our quality standards.
Project Synopsis: Expected Results
To measure the success of the project, we would like you to:

  1. Measurably reducing risk in our supply chain: You will measure the success of the project by the reduction in supply chain risks. This could be measured by the number of supply chain disruptions experienced over a specific period of time, or by the number of non-compliant vendors identified and eliminated.

  2. Improving vendor onboarding and management process: The success of the project will be reflected in the improvement of our vendor management practices. This could be measured by the number of vendors that meet our quality standards, the reduction in lead time for products, and improved pricing.

  3. Implementing best practices: You will measure the success of the project by the successful implementation of policies, procedures, and intake processes related to non-ABA suppliers. This could be measured by the number of companies that have adopted these policies and procedures, and the reduction in risks associated with non-ABA suppliers.

  4. Increasing purchasing power, leading to cost savings: You will also measure the success of the project by assessing the cost savings achieved through the optimization of our supply chain. This could be measured by the reduction in procurement costs or the increase in revenue resulting from improved supply chain performance.

  5. Increasing transparency between portfolio companies: You will measure the success of the project by assessing the impact of our efforts to promote synergies in buying. This could be measured by the number of our companies that are using the same non-ABA vendors, the increased volume of purchases from non-ABA vendors, and the reduction in costs for products.
