Project Title Advancing a Community-Centered Vision for the Astoria Waterfront
Project Topics Urban Planning
Skills & Expertise
Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
The Old Astoria Neighborhood Association Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering community engagement and enhancing the quality of life in Astoria, New York. Known for its advocacy work, OANA has been instrumental in promoting local cultural assets and improving neighborhood conditions. However, despite their efforts, the challenge remains to effectively connect and elevate Astoria’s cultural assets to create a cohesive and economically beneficial arts district.

The specific business challenge lies in the fragmented nature of Astoria’s cultural and recreational offerings, which restricts the potential for a vibrant, interconnected arts district. The lack of connectivity between public art installations, museums, parks, and commercial corridors diminishes the area's appeal as a unified destination for both residents and tourists. This fragmentation limits economic opportunities and underutilizes the area's potential as a cultural hub.

The current impact of this challenge is a waterfront that fails to fully engage the community or attract visitors, resulting in missed economic benefits and limited cultural visibility. By addressing this gap, the project presents an opportunity for students to apply their academic training to real-world issues, gaining practical experience in urban planning while delivering tangible value to OANA.

The project will unfold in several phases, beginning with a comprehensive landscape scan to understand the current state of Astoria’s cultural assets. This will be followed by a stakeholder and asset analysis to identify key players and resources. Students will then explore peer examples from other successful arts/waterfront districts to inform their strategy development. The final phase involves creating a strategy toolkit with actionable recommendations and implementation priorities.

This project is ideal for students as it offers a multifaceted learning experience that encompasses systems thinking, spatial analysis, and stakeholder consultation. Students will gain valuable insights into urban planning, community engagement, and economic development, preparing them for future professional roles in the field.
